In order to talk about the historic center of Málaga, it is necessary to refer to its extensive history. In the years before the 90s, the city of Malaga did not enjoy its current tourist fame. The capital of the Costa del Sol was, until then, a transit place for visitors who crossed it on their way to other parts of the Spanish geography.
In the mid-90s, Malaga started to undergo an important change, a change that completely transformed it. As a consequence, the city of Malaga took its first steps towards the path that led it to become the privileged settlement that it is today. Malaga is full of light and life.
Since then and until today it has become a city with great maritime traffic of tourists, cheerful, welcoming and with the best beaches in southern Spain. Its key points are mostly located around the magnificent old town, where the main monuments and places of interest of the city converge. The lucky ones who visit Malaga will find architectural jewels such as the Gibralfaro Castle. Monument of great historical value connecting directly with the Alcazaba, an ancient construction that served both as a fort and as a royal dwelling during the time of Arab ruling in the ancient age. Next to it, the Roman Theater, the main vestige of Roman times, and Málaga’s magnificent cathedral, named ‘La Manquita’ due to the fact that its south tower was never finished.
The historic center of Malaga is considered as a paradise for culture lovers, not only because of the diverse origin of the monuments that we can find in its streets, but also because of the flourishing ecosystem of museums and art centers that are constantly developing. A walk through Malaga has some must-visit points, such as visiting the most outstanding museums such as the Carmen Thyssen museum, the Palacio de la Aduana, the emblematic Pompidou center and of course the one dedicated to Malaga’s most famous artist, the Pablo Picasso Museum. With these brushstrokes it is possible to get an idea of the overwhelming cultural offer of the city.
The Historic Center of Malaga is configured around a central axis: the dazzling Calle Larios. Named for the emblematic Larios family. In this place it is possible to enjoy a tour of the most luxurious boutiques and restaurants in the city. In addition, from this street there is a direct entrance to the famous Pasaje de Chinitas, a meeting place for artists, bullfighters and poets during the 19th and 20th centuries. In fact, this passage was immortalized by the great Federico García Lorca in one of his poems.
In addition to all the above, the historic center of Malaga offers us an infinite number of terraces, bars and restaurants where we can offer the visitor the best of Malaga’s gastronomy, examples of which are the famous El Pimpi tavern, Casa Guardia or the Refectorium restaurant. As well as in the Muelle Uno area, where you can enjoy a five-star dinner on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
From Costa del Sol – Christie’s International Real Estate we assure you that visiting Malaga means entering a city full of light and life.
