United Airlines announces re-launch of Malaga-New York route in summer 2023

The Costa del Sol is in luck because it is restarting its air links with the Americans. United Airlines has announced this October that it will launch next year a non-stop air service Malaga – New York.

Let’s take off!

The first take-off will take place on 2 June 2023 and a rhythm of three flights per week will be established between the two cities. For the moment it will be a seasonal line, from June to September, but it is hoped that it will be extended to the rest of the year. Next summer it will be a reality that the two destinations will once again be just eight and a half hours’ flight away.

Direct flights can now be booked

The commitment to these new flights is so real that tickets can already be booked. Either directly from the airline’s website or from wider travel service platforms such as e-Dreams. Travel costs around 800 euros (similar in dollars), with cheaper or premium services on offer depending on traveller demand.

Luxury travellers from New York for a luxury destination at Costa del Sol

The customer profile that will make use of this new service will be a traveller with high purchasing power. It could be said to be a luxury traveller who wants to and can spend. Once at Malaga airport, it is expected that some will make a stopover to the rest of Europe, but that many will have established the capital of the Costa del Sol as their destination.

From holidays… to living, investing or teleworking on the Costa del Sol

The real estate sector hopes that a first holiday on the Costa del Sol will eventually lead to the purchase of a second holiday home, a move to the destination as a property investment or a telecommuting move under the sun, as many other foreign residents are already doing.

In fact, Costa del Sol – Christie’s Real Estate is already prepared to receive enquiries about luxury properties from potential North American clients and has reinforced its team for this purpose.

There was already a connection to Europe’s California

Until 2019, and after eleven years in operation, Delta stopped operating direct flights Malaga-New York without really giving any reason. This left Andalusia somewhat more disconnected from the growing US tourism.

The COVID pandemic brought all commercial flights worldwide to a standstill. Today, with the pandemic peaks down, the demand for flights has recovered steadily and airlines are beginning to leave behind the worst crisis in their history. They are even starting to take on new destinations. Malaga and the Costa del Sol are fashionable destinations, in great demand, and the airlines have decided to revive a regular flow of passengers to the area.

Many Americans fall in love with the Costa del Sol as soon as they land and it is even familiar to them. In fact, in many forums the Costa del Sol is known as the California of Europe. The lifestyle, warm temperatures and beautiful beaches are similar. Even the US First Lady herself, Michelle Obama, stayed for a couple of weeks in a Marbella hotel in 2010 with her daughter Sasha.

New service includes premium options

United Airlines‘ new non-stop service from Malaga to New York/Newark will be operated with Boeing 757-200 aircraft. It will have a total of 169 seats. Of these, 16 seats will be business class and 153 will be economy class (including 45 Economy Plus seats with extra legroom). The business class, called United Polaris, is, in the company’s words, a premium travel experience. It prioritises relaxation and comfort with quality in-flight meals, Sunday Riley toiletries and lie-flat seats.

New York – Newark

The US airport to be served will be Newark Liberty International Airport at New York. It is located in northern New Jersey about 22.5 km from Manhattan and links well with the area’s metropolitan transport system. It is one of the largest airports in the United States where United is a major airline.

Travel to Malaga for pleasure and end up making a great real estate deal

The dollar is strong against the euro. This has meant that many Americans looking to invest in real estate have set their sights on the European market. Spain’s real estate offer and its great bastion of quality of life, the Costa del Sol, stand out in particular. Let’s not forget that this sunny territory is where the most luxurious properties on the Spanish coast are concentrated. The most dazzling villas are mainly concentrated in Marbella and Benahavís.

Miami, Houston or Canada will be the next destinations

The Andalusian Minister of Tourism, Arturo Bernal, has pointed out that in addition to maintaining and improving the established airport connection with New York, the Andalusian authorities are pinning their hopes on other destinations. Miami, Houston and Canada are expected to be the new points of connection with North America. This is part of a strategy to expand Andalusia’s tourism and trade to markets that are flourishing in the United States.
